The Concept of Place

Place is more than just location

What do I mean by that?

A place *can* be thought of as a location which could be plotted on a map or defined by a grid reference!

Example:
53.622450493727385, -1.8813308994814808 is Slaithwaite, England: (my own image :))

BUT, these strings of numbers don't tell us anything actually about that place; i.e. what it's like, who lives there, or how it has changed over time.
For this reason, many geographers use a broader definition of the term "place". The idea is that "place" is made up of ALL the things that come together to make a place what it is, including:

It's location
Physical characteristics of the landscape (topography, physical features)
Human characteristics, and human features of the landscape (the people, land use or built environment
All things that flow in and out of that place, such as money, people, ideas, resources
Sense of place; the emotional meanings the place has, either to individuals or groups of people

Apart from location, all aspects of places, those listed above, are constantly changing!
Physical characteristics can change over long time scales (such as river migration) or short scales (volcanic eruption, for instance)
Human characteristics can change over whole lifetimes (new people born, others die) or shorter time (people migrating)
Flows in and out of a place change; flows of money could change when a TNC invests in a new factory, or closes an existing one.

Foxconn factory in Shenzhen, China

Sense of place individuals or groups have may change; the places a person played in as a child will not have the same meanings to that person when they return there as an adult.
Different groups or individuals may also have a different sense of the same place. For example, one person may think of a city centre as a place of excitement or opportunity, whilst another person may think of it as a place of stress.

Liverpool City Centre, England

Place can create insiders and outsiders

The idea of place is important because many people create their identity based on the places they feel connected to, e.g. a person may consider coming from Manchester to be part of who they are.
This is because individuals share characteristics that they feel bind them together as a group, creating a shared identity for all the people from that place. This can be seen at a variety of scales:

Local - individuals from a village share a positive sense of that village
Regional - individuals from a region sharing an accent
National - individuals of a nation sharing a language, religion, or a love for that nation

Relating identity to particular places means that people can be perceived as belonging to those places or not. This is the idea that people are 'insiders' or 'outsiders' in particular places.

An insider is someone who is familiar with a place and who feels welcome in that place, i.e. they feel that they belong there.
An outsider is someone who feels unwelcome or excluded from a place, i.e. they don't feel that they belong there.

An LGBT+ bar in London, somewhere I'm sure much of the RR player base would be insiders

There are, of course, many factors that can make someone feel like an insider or an outsider, including age, sexuality or gender.

People can have a sense of place for experienced or media places

People can have a sense of place for places they've been to, and places they haven't been to.

Experienced places are places that people have spent time in. When a person visits or lives in a place their experiences, such as the things they see and the people they meet, shape their sense of that place.

Huddersfield, England. Somewhere I personally see as an experienced place.

Media places are places that people have not been to, but have created a sense of place for through their depiction in media.

The United States, a place I have never experienced personally, but I have a sense of through the media.

A person's sense of media place can be very different to the lived experience of the same place - this is because the media may present a place in a particular way and for a particular purpose.

Places can be categorised as near or far

Near places can be thought of as geographically near to where a person lives, and far places as distant from a where a person lives.
People are more likely to feel like insiders in near places, as they are more likely to have experienced them and feel comfortable in them.
Not all people will feel like insiders in all geographically near places though - people may feel excluded from near places for many reasons, including age, gender, sexuality, race, religion.
People are more likely to feel like outsiders in far places, as they are less likely to have experienced them and feel comfortable in them.

Bradford, somewhere where I am geographically near to.

In more recent decades, globalisation has affected people's experience of geographical distance;
improvements in travel technology mean that far places are quicker to get to, and can therefore be experienced more easily and frequently.
improvements in ICT mean that people can be very familiar with media places.
People can also remain closely connected with people and activities in far places via the internet.

Baghdad, Iraq. A place that, for me, is a far place.

It's increasingly likely today that people may feel closely connected to, and even like insiders, in places that are geographically far away.
Global companies and products also mean that far places can feel very similar to near places, e.g. city centres in different parts of the world may have all the same chain stores, selling the same products.
Geographers use the term 'placelessness' to describe how globalisation is making distant places look and feel the same.

On the same jist, next episode: 'clone towns', anyone?
